RoCM Playlist: 01 Mar 2025

Welcome to March – things seem to be going great, don’t they? Yikes…

I finally watched the 2018 documentary on free jazz called Fire Music (2018). I think it’s… good. It definitely hits some of the high points and I will say, as a starting point or primer, it’s worth the viewing. I do think there are some gaps and omissions that hurt it a bit – in fairness, trying to cover everything in a 2 hour film is a bit tough – but over all quiteI liked it. There is some really great archival footage and interviews that make it really worth the time.

This week, quite a few tracks by artists we rarely hear from on the show. We have tracks by Prince Lasha, Ted Daniel, and a group known as Commitment. In the second hour, we have a track by Carlos Garnett, a rare track by Sounds of Liberation, with the hour rounded out with tracks by Charles Brackeen and Ornette Coleman.

And, we sadly say goodbye to Roberta Flack.

Here is the playlist. Don’t forget that you can listen to the RoCM online at KCSB-FM’s website and there’s an online archive available for two weeks after the show airs.
