RoCM Playlist: 07 Dec 2024

So today – Dec 7th – is the 75th birthday of Tom Waits. If you’ve tuned into the RoCM for any length of time – you can probably guess that I am a bit of a fan of his music. We end the first hour with a couple of tunes from his 1976 appearance on Vin Scelsa‘s “Idiot’s Delight“, recorded a week after Waits’ 27th birthday.

Incidentally, Vin Scelsa had a 47 year run on the airwaves of NYC until he retired in 2015.

As far as the playlist for this week, there a track from Billy Higgins, who has appeared on at least a dozen tracks featured on RoCM but this is his first track as a bandleader. There is an unintentionally rare from Yusef Lateef, as well as some standards from the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Jeanne Lee, and Muhal Richard Abrams. The track by the Frank LoweBilly Bang Quartet is also very much worth your time.

That track by Norman Howard – a rare track that was only available on cassette when it was released – is also amazing

Don’t forget that you can listen to the RoCM online at KCSB-FM’s website and there’s an online archive available for two weeks after the show airs.
