RoCM Playlist (Alice Coltrane Tribute): 31 August 2024
So Tuesday, August 27th would have been the 87th birthday of Alice Coltrane – so this week I put together a tribute of sorts to her work. A two hour program doesn’t really do her justice, but it’s what we have with which to work. The first hour features two lengthy but beautiful tracks that feature Alice Coltrane as a bandleader – and the second hour largely consists of her work on the albums of others. I thought it a fair tribute to highlight both areas of her contributions to jazz.
I do throw in a track by Flying Lotus, who also happens to be the grandnephew of Alice Coltrane.
Full disclosure – I got this show out by a hair as we returned from vacation very late Wednesday evening which basically gave me Thursday to work through the haze and put the show together. Just a fair warning that it might be a tad rough around the edges.
Anyway – here is the playlist. Don’t forget that you can listen online at KCSB-FM’s website and there’s an online archive available for two weeks after the show airs.
