RoCM HBD John Coltrane Playlist: 23 Sept 2023
So on September 23, 1926, one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century was born – John Coltrane. And since it is the rare occasion that the birthday of this former Long Island resident and unmatched jazz genius falls on a Saturday, we are spending this show celebrating his legacy by focusing on the period of his production that most relates to the style of jazz that we typically feature here at the RoCM – the experimental, free jazz focused years of 1965-1967.
So here is the John Coltrane heavy playlist for this week. Don’t forget that you can listen online at KCSB-FM’s website, the show is also re-aired on KCSB-FM on Wednesdays at midnight, and there is an online archive available for two weeks after the show airs for both the original airing tonight and the Wednesday re-air.
And today, make sure to send a nod up to the jazz heavens in his honor. Long live Coltrane!
