RoCM Playlist: 07 Jan 2023

So the first week of 2023 is finally behind us – only 51 more weeks to go until 2024 – and quite a week it’s been.

On a personal note, I got my fourth COVID shot this week… so that was fun. As much as these are a necessity and I generally have no adverse reactions to the seasonal flu shot, the after effects of the COVID boosters are really something. I typically go through the day in full denial of feeling anything – this time I even got into my workout clothes in anticipation of holding on to at least one of my New Year’s resolutions through the first week, but, by mid-afternoon, I was pretty wiped out.

And then there’s the news about our Long Island congressperson, George Santos – the newly elected representative of the 3rd District of NY – who seems to have invented his entire résumé. For those wondering, that is no longer my district here on Long Island as the redistricting last summer moved my neighborhood into NY-1. That was Lee Zeldin’s old district – so not exactly an improvement and which also went to the Republicans in the midterms as Zeldin instead ran a fortunately failed (but too close for comfort) bid for NY governor so his seat was won by Nick LaLota.

I swear, some of these names feel like they are right of a Long Island inspired name generator. I guess, in some ways, they are….

Anyway, I think conventional wisdom had NY-3 as a pretty sure thing for Democrats and, of course, they managed to blow it and hand the seat to someone like George Santos. Insert “shoulder shrug emoji” here.

I could do a whole post on the NY State and Long Island Democrats unending talents for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory – but this is a jazz radio blog!

Is it? Yes, it is!

And lest folks in CA are getting on their high horse about politics – how about that Kevin McCarthy!

Anyhoo… quite the opening salvo for 2023… and with that here’s the playlist for this week.
